***************The Big Questions to Consider

A. What do you hope to achieve in creating your kin domain? (three short points)

1) Exchange energy rather than currency. 2) Live to work, rather than work to live. 3) Build something I would be proud to leave behind. Live a life I would be proud for others to know about.

B. Create a priority list (Example” Community, family, business, education, sport, health discussion groups, self-awareness)

Family, Friends, Pets, Health. Family, Friends, Pets, Health. Etc. Everything else is replaceable.

C. If money or anything else is not a barrier, would you build your kin domain on your own or with a community? Why?

We already live in a community (neighborhood) and I know community has advantages that “alone” does not. When it snows, the neighbor plows for us, when my husband was sick, the neighbors showed up to chop wood. When our neighbors go away we feed their cat or get their kids off the bus. No money changes hands, and the favors may be small, but sharing ourselves, our life and our time with others eases each of our lives in a time of need. When no one needs anything, we often share our lives with a meal or kayaking on the water or laughing around a campfire. We have no desire to be hermits.

D. If you have a choice would you prefer to live, on the grid, generate energy using an alternative method, have animal, or human driven energy? Why?

Alternative (solar/wind), as I have lived with zero electric and plumbing/water, and its fun in the summer, good for a short time, but colder weather it is too hard. Also, oil lamps are dirty and burn my eyes and I once caught my house on fire with a candle so I am paranoid around open flames. Plus, I never feel save with oil lamps and candles and such w/ a blind dude and dog tails around.

Specifics to Consider Regarding the Settlement

  1. Steps you see for developing our settlement:

I would say water and food need to come first. That’s just practical on the life scale. Long term I see water, food, homes, a library (maybe w/ internet-phone access) for residents and home school kids, maybe a community center in the same building for meetings, meals, classes, guest lodging…

  1. Where you see your ideal settlement (mountains, plains, valleys, forests, water sources etc) :

A home nestled in the trees, near water (I crave water) with a plain filled with gardens and lots of sunshine.

  1. The size of the settlement (acreage and number of families):

I have lived on a 265 acre farm, and though it sounds huge, it’s not. I think 10-12 FT families would be enough, with PT and guests mixed in, 270 acres is a neighborhood (wave, cause I can see you).

  1. Community versus individual: Community is great, but as individuals and separate families space is always needed as we have different needs, routines, preferences in our live. Individuals, couples, families –they all need some sacred space. For myself, when I am writing, I want to be left alone, uninterrupted, no background noise, no distractions. Doesn’t always happen, but I like it that way. I call it my hibernation time. But I enjoy community as well. The balance we each need varies.
  2. Work versus help: Back to the community question, when I am helping my neighbor, who also helps me, it does not feel like work, it feels like friendship.
  3. The type of roads, if any: Dirt? Whatever. I really have no opinion.
  4. Mechanical devices, machines, and vehicle in the settlement: Maybe as needed to crate dwellings. Probably not garages at every house filled w/ cars, motorbikes and golf carts.
  5. Water: drinking, gray water, black water: Drinking water, filtered, Grey water reused or recycled. Black water, not needed at all if we don’t have conventional toilets. Black water- yuck! Also, no chemical ridden grey water.
  6. Power sources (human power, animal power, solar, hydro electric, generator): Generators make a lot of noise.
  7. Garbage management: Recycling center. Paper/cardboard can be used in garden or for fires or to make paper. Work to eliminate so much of it.
  8. Energy bank(exchange) vs. money: I like the energy bank/barter system if all can get an exchange they feel is fair, so we don’t have grudges of folks feeling cheated.
  9. Common spaces:  common land, structures, how much acreage devoted to common space, purpose of land and structures (education, spiritual practice, industry, sport, growing): Yes. I don’t have an opinion on size, whatever is needed?

Personal Domain Questions

  • Size of your Domain (acres): For families, I really think 5-10 acres. I have lived on 1 acre, as well as one 265 acres. 1 acres you can see in each others windows, 5 not so much, 10 leaves a nice space. Of course, there may be those –singles or whatever, who prefer a shared space with 5 homes in a 1 acre circle…
  • How big is your dwelling? Plan? Maybe 200-400 SF
  • What kind of material are you using for your home? Cordwood, stone & straw bales.
  • Are you creating your dwelling alone, with friends or of hiring someone? Hopefully w/ friend J
  • Pets and wild animals on Domain. Of course you know we have dogs, so my vote is yeah. At least until we get there! Then I don’t care if the rules change!!! LOL!!!
  • Water, power source and sewer system. Water? I don’t know, whatever works out for the space/source, etc. Power- solar (also would consider wind, but $$$ talks). Sewer –I’d prefer none, reusable grey water & composting toilet.
  • Amenities (electronics, machines, appliances, hand tools) : Somewhere to keep food cool, somewhere to cook. Otherwise, whatever.
  • Your gardens, orchards, paths, ponds, forest (feel free to include a drawing): Probably what I have now- a large herb garden, a kitchen garden, a canning garden, fruit and berries. Or combined w/ a big shared garden. Gardens are like art, I find they sort of create themselves. I love to garden. But never in dull straight rows.
